It is the mountain itself which from out there makes itself seen by the painter; it is the mountain that he interrogates with his gaze.
Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Eye and Mind
Maddie Wheelers practice explores an aversion to verbal syntax through a phenomenological approach. With a strong focus of viewer as partaker, works aim to engage the viewer in a dialogue surrounding material relations and visual interaction. A strong interest in physical interaction with materials drives works aesthetically. Projection and sculpture are often used, addressing hierarchies of space and sympathetic sensations within the viewer through the use of the hand. (2016)
